All about Sea Moss

Difference between Gold Sea Moss and Irish Sea Moss

Back in 1845, during the "Irish Potato Famine", lacking their usual nutrient intake from potatoes, the Irish were led to consume Chondrus Crispus, what is referred to today as "Irish Sea Moss." By doing so, they were unknowingly consuming one of the most mineral dense seaweeds.

This amazing “Irish Sea Moss” typically grows on rocky coastlines in colder waters such as those in the Northern Hemisphere, around the Northern Atlantic. This red/brown algae can be recognized by it's color and it's flat looking thallus (stem and leaves). Our Wildcrafted Irish Sea Moss is sustainably hand-harvested and thrives where cold waters meet strong currents, being fully exposed to the ocean.

This amazing, nutrient packed algae by the name of Eucheuma Cottonii, also known as "Caribbean Sea Moss" thrives in warm ocean waters. Ours is carefully sourced from mineral rich waters of the Caribbean shores in the Grenadines.

Nutritional elements in these different algae are very similar, making them both superb supplements. One isn't better than the other, but because Irish sea moss grows in deep cold waters, it’s mineral concentration is higher than the Caribbean sea moss.

Sea Moss contains many of the trace minerals our body needs daily to function in it’s optimal state.

Raw sea moss is known to have 90+ essential minerals.

Some of these elements include:

  • Boron (B)
  • Calcium (Ca)
  • Copper (Cu)
  • Folate (‎C19H19N7O6)
  • Iodine (I)
  • Iron (Fe)
  • Manganese (Mn)
  • Magnesium (Mg)
  • Nitrogen (N)
  • Phosphoric Acid (P2O5)
  • Potassium (K)
  • Potassium chloride (KCI)
  • Selenium (Se)
  • Sulfur (S)

and Carbohydrates such as:

  • Alginic Acid (C6H11No6)n

What are some of these trace minerals good for?

Sea Moss benefits

Because of it's high mineral profile, sea moss is considered an amazing and unique daily supplement.

Iodine is needed to support a healthy thyroid function, allowing it to create and use important hormones in the thyroid gland. One of the signs of thyroid disorder is rapid weight gain being difficult to reduce through diet and exercise.

Because of it's high iron content, sea moss can prevent iron deficiency while fending off and treating anemia. Not enough iron leads to a low level of hemoglobin.

Potassium chloride effectively relieves phlegm congestion. Sea moss dissolves the catarrh, which is phlegm and inflammation of the mucous membrane. It helps by preventing congestion, alleviating breathing problems brought on by the flu, sinus infections and asthma.

Collagen helps strengthen connective tissues, aids in quick wound recovery and works wonders for our skin complexion.

A compound by the name of Algin is a kind of phytonutrient, which facilitates the ability to effectively eliminate metal residue in the body — such as mercury, consumed through deep sea fish.(Salmon and Halibut, to name a couple) What a way to detoxify!

It is high in fiber and great for gut health. It can have a prebiotic effect during digestion. It increases short-chain fatty acids in the colon, rid bad bacteria from the gut and improve overall gut health and immunity, alleviating constipation.

Sea moss acts as an anticoagulant/blood thinner. Those taking medications for such should abstain from consuming sea moss.

Potassium promotes mental function and balances behavior. It provides relief from depression, mood swings, agitation and anxiety disorders. It is an essential electrolyte for proper cell function.

Selenium, an antioxidant enzyme, is another essential element for proper cell function.

It is also known to support a healthy libido, promote good sex drive as it acts as an aphrodisiac. Said to help those with erectile dysfunction and infertility.

Using it as a face mask hydrates and keeps moisture in, providing a deep and nutritious “me time.”

Some have had great success in promoting hair growth while applying a topical mask where hair no longer grows.

A happy gut could lead to healthy weight loss.

The best part is that, when taken in it's raw form, our body can easily absorb these vital nutrients. Some people use it for cooking, although we highly recommend NOT heating it up or over processing it.

Please be extra cautious!!

When purchasing genuine ocean grown Sea Moss, be careful as many sellers have turned to pool grown sea moss, contaminated with chemicals and high salt levels. They claim to be all natural sea grown moss when in reality it’s depleting this algae from it's vital nutrients, therefore no longer promoting these amazing benefits.
